How Support Works in Practice

Trauma-Informed Support

We recognise that leaving abuse can affect trust, confidence and a person’s sense of control. Support is therefore paced around each survivor’s circumstances, choices and readiness, with clear communication, respectful listening and no pressure to move faster than feels manageable.

Recovery and Rebuilding

Reaching safe accommodation is an important beginning, but rebuilding stability takes time. Her Safe Network supports survivors regain confidence, strengthen everyday independence and work towards practical goals that support a safer and more sustainable future.

Pets Are Part of the Family

For some survivors, leaving abuse also means protecting an animal that may be at risk. Where suitable arrangements can be made, our pet-friendly approach considers the safety and wellbeing of both the survivor and their pet as part of accommodation and support planning.

Who can access HSN services?
HSN supports people escaping domestic abuse, crisis or unsafe circumstances who need safe accommodation and practical support. This includes women, men, LGBTQ+ survivors, families, people from diverse communities and backgrounds, those who need language or interpreting support, and survivors with pets. Each referral is reviewed according to the person’s circumstances, risks, needs and the availability of suitable accommodation.

Survivors and professionals can complete HSN’s online Referral Form. Please provide a safe method and time for contact, together with relevant information about immediate risks, communication needs, accommodation requirements and any pets. HSN will review the referral promptly and may contact the survivor or referrer for further information before confirming the appropriate next steps.

Urgent referrals are reviewed promptly. Where possible, HSN acknowledges referrals on the same business day, checks availability and completes an initial review of risks and accommodation needs. Same-day placement may be possible where suitable accommodation is available and the person’s needs can be met safely.
Yes. HSN offers pet-friendly placements where suitable accommodation and arrangements are available. We recognise that pets may also be harmed or used as part of coercive control, and that concern for an animal can prevent or delay someone from leaving abuse. Our placement planning considers the safety and welfare of both the survivor and their pet, including any practical arrangements needed during the stay.
Support begins from arrival and is based on each survivor’s circumstances, risks and agreed priorities. It may include safety planning, regular wellbeing and emotional support, practical advocacy, help with benefits, forms and appointments, support to access health, legal and specialist services, language or digital support, independent living support and move-on planning. Support is reviewed as needs and circumstances change.
Where HSN cannot offer a suitable placement, we will explain the outcome to the survivor or referrer and, where possible, discuss appropriate next steps or alternative services. Accommodation will only be offered where suitable arrangements are available and the person’s needs can be met safely.
