Online Safety and Covering Your Tracks

Your safety comes first

Using the internet can leave information on a phone, tablet or computer. If another person may check, access or control this device, use a safer device where possible. Deleting history or changing settings may be noticed, so only take these steps when it is safe for you.

1. Leave this website quickly

Use the Quick Exit button to leave the Her Safe Network website quickly. Quick Exit does not delete browsing history, cookies, website data or live-chat history.

2. Use live chat safely

Our live chat is provided by Tidio. It only opens after Performance cookies are enabled. Tidio may store chat settings and chat history in local storage on the browser and device you are using.

To remove Tidio chat history from this browser or device:
  • Open your browser settings and look for Privacy, Cookies, Site data or Clear browsing data.
  • Remove website data for hersafenetwork.org and tidio.com. If clearing browsing data, select Cookies and site data as well as Browsing history.
  • On a desktop computer, if the chat history remains: right-click a blank area of the page, select Inspect, open Application, then Local Storage, right-click https://hersafenetwork.org and select Clear.
  • Close and reopen the browser.

Clearing information from the browser removes the locally stored history from that browser or device. It does not necessarily delete a copy held in HSN’s Tidio account. To request deletion of information linked to a chat, email dpo@hersafenetwork.org with the approximate date and time of the conversation. Requests will be considered in line with data protection law and any safeguarding or legal requirements.

3. Delete your browsing history and website data

Browser menu names can change after updates. Where possible, you may remove only the Her Safe Network entries rather than clearing all history. Remember that deleting all history may be noticeable to another person who uses the device.

  • Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Firefox: open the browser menu, select History or Privacy, then Clear or Delete browsing data. Choose a time period and select Browsing history. Select Cookies and site data if you also want to remove Tidio information.
  • Safari on iPhone or iPad: open Settings, select Apps, then Safari, and choose Clear History and Website Data.
  • Safari on a Mac: in Safari, select History, then Clear History. To remove stored website data, go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, search for Her Safe Network or Tidio, and select Remove.

4. Use a safer device where possible

A safer device is one that the person you are concerned about cannot access, monitor or control. This may be a trusted person’s phone, a work or library computer where personal use is permitted, or a device provided by a support worker.

  • Avoid signing in to shared Apple, Google or Microsoft accounts.
  • Do not save passwords, and consider turning off sensitive notification previews on the lock screen.
  • Private or incognito browsing can reduce what the browser saves after the window is closed, but it cannot hide activity from monitoring software, shared accounts, managed networks or internet providers.
  • No method can guarantee that all online activity is hidden, particularly where a device, account or network is being monitored.
  • If you think a device is being monitored, do not remove unfamiliar apps, trackers or account access if this could alert someone or increase the risk. Use a safer device to seek support first.

5. Check for other traces

When it is safe, also consider checking:

  • open and recently closed browser tabs;
  • downloads, screenshots and saved files;
  • emails, text messages, call logs, voicemail and lock-screen notifications;
  • saved passwords, autofill information and browsing history synchronised to another device; and
  • shared accounts and location-sharing settings.

6. Need help?

Her Safe Network provides safe accommodation and support for people escaping domestic abuse, crisis or unsafe circumstances.
